While surfing quilting porn one night, I stumbled across this super cute pennant quilt from Emily Schildhouse. Check it out:

And bless her, she told exactly how she made it. When I heard a friend of mine was going to have his first son, I decided to give it a shot. I had also recently fallen in love with the Wee Wander line from Sarah Jane. I didn't end up using all the fabrics that came in the fat quarter bundle due to contrast issues. And a cute quilt was born...
Below are the materials used:

Because I had so much fun making the last one and because my son's Kindergarten teacher was going on maternity leave, I decided to make this again in pink. I think I have stumbled onto my signature newborn gift. What's better than a handmade quilt?
In anticipation of making this quilt many more times, I have bought 2 one yard bundles of the Riley Blake Basics Variety in Black. Since the fabric is getting harder to find, I had to buy it now while I can still find it. At least that's what I told my husband...

After all that pink and purple, I decided to go to the completely opposite route - black and white! Since newborns have a difficult time distinguishing color and enjoy high contrast patterns, what's better than a scrappy black and white quilt? This was a really fun quilt to make!
I used a jelly roll and started with a 2.5" x 2.5" patterned square for each center and blocked it with a 1.5" black strip. The next row is a random assembly of the different prints from the jelly roll, with one extra fabric thrown in for more variety. I added Diamond Eye by Alexander Henry, which I also used for binding. I included a strip of the various fabrics on the back for more contrast. Simple and fun!

What to do with all that leftover MLP fabric? Make yet another quilt for a little girl who used MLP on her birthday invites.
I can honestly say, I am now over this. On to something not pink or purple!
For my very first foray into the quilting world, my best friend asked me to make her daughter a My Little Pony quilt. Since I have a boy, I was slightly thrilled to bask in the pink and purply world of little girls.
For this quilt, MLP fabric was scarce; only one cotton print was available. To supplement the fabric, I ordered a set of cheap sheets which turned out to be polyester (ugh!). I decided to use them anyway, albeit sparingly. Those are the larger ponies on the left. I found a stripe fabric that had all the colors I represented as well to tie it all together. Below are the fabrics I used and where I got them from:
Walmart: My Little Pony sheets
Etsy: Hasbro My Little Pony fabric
Joann: Kona Cotton Solid - Crocus Purple
Joann: Solid - Bright Pink (Would have loved to use Kona but couldn't find a comparable color)
Hawthorne Threads: Riley Blake Designs - Doddlebug Designs - Lovey Dovey Collection - Stripes in Purple
Hawthorne Threads: Aurifil - Violet #2520 in 40wt
Below is a photo of the quilt top. In the future, I will try to remember to take a photo after its quilted and bound (and not on my floor!).
All in all, not bad for my first foray into quilting!
